Thirsty? There's a global wine shortage

wine undersupply

Wine producers, like these harvesters in Spain, are falling behind the worldwide rise in demand.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) There's just not enough wine in the world, says Morgan Stanley, and the problem is only going to get worse.

The industry is experiencing an "undersupply of nearly 300 million cases" a year, according to a report from Morgan Stanley Research.

Australia-based analysts Tom Kierath and Crystal Wang say the shortage comes despite the fact that there are one million wine producers globally, making 2.8 million cases each year. About half of that comes from Europe.

But that's not enough to keep with worldwide demand

Global production fell by more than 5% last year - to its lowest level since the 1960s - primarily do to bad weather in France and Argentina.

Top Small Cap Stocks To Own Right Now

Production in Europe alone dropped 10% in 2012, the report said. That same year, worldwide consumption rose by 1%.

The French consume the most wine, followed by Americans, and then the Chinese.

Wine has become particularly popular in China, as the economy booms and the standard of living there rises. China is also producing more wine of its own, said the report.

America consumes 12% of the world's wine but produces just 8%. And the U.S. is only getting thirstier ; consumption rose 2% last year.

The U.S. wine making industry is also growing. The number of American wineries has "expanded dramatically" in the last 15 years, according to the report. But most of them are "boutique" operators rather than major producers, so they're not driving any real growth in supply.

And there is little reason to believe that global wine production will pick up any time soon.

Morgan Stanley said that output from newer producers like the U.S., Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa has already peaked. To top of page

Hot European Stocks To Buy For 2015

AMSTERDAM (AP) -- A top lawyer at the European Court of Justice said Tuesday thatGoogle (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) and other search engines should not have to remove web pages containing personal information from their search indexes.

In a blow for the "right to be forgotten" privacy principle in Europe, the court's independent Advocate General, Niilo Jaaskinen, said in a formal opinion that websites, notGoogle, should bear responsibility for information they publish.

Jaaskinen saidGoogle'ssearch function "does not imply any control over the content included on third party web pages." His opinion is not binding, but judges will typically follow much of its reasoning when they issue their decision later this year.

Google'sinformation indexing system "does not even enable the Internet search engine provider to distinguish between personal data...and other data," Jaaskinen said.

The Luxembourg-based ECJ was asked to weigh in on the issue after a case in Spain, where the national data protection agency received complaints from individuals who said personal information from years earlier could be found on a simple Internet search.

Advisors' Opinion:

AerCap (AER) provides aircraft leasing and aviation finance services. This stock closed up 3.3% at $18 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 740,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 318,589

    Volume % Change: 85%

From a technical perspective, AER jumped higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $17.27 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares moving higher from its low of $14.84 to its recent high of $18.16. During that uptrend, shares of AER have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of AER within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if AER manages to take out its 52-week high at $18.16 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AER as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $17.27 or above more near-term support at $17.17 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $18.16 with volume that's near or above 318,589 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then AER will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $20 to $23.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

You can see the same trends among many individual European stocks. Telecom giant Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) has big exposure to Latin America, but investors focus on its home country of Spain in limiting its gains. The same trend has affected French oil giant Total (NYSE: TOT  ) , which shares the same exposure to energy projects around the world yet has been tarnished by its proximity to the crisis-ridden continent. By focusing on value rather than perception, you can get some great values when others are being irrational.

When Krzanich said he was committed to the rapidly changing mobile computing market, he wasn't kidding; and that should be sweet music to the ears of Intel shareholders.

Like Universal Display, InvenSense (INVN) represents a good long-term opportunity in its own right. The price entry point is not quite as good, though it has pulled back under my more recent price target of $15, when reports of a long-awaited Apple design win were challenged. Though conversations between the two are ongoing, InvenSense management's comments indicate an unwillingness to get roped into wrecking margin for volume, like many other Apple suppliers. Consequently, I don't believe they will gain Apple as a customer until the release of an iWatch or similar device that absolutely requires InvenSense's best-in-class form factors and power usage. It's also possible that continued good news on their legal battles with ST Micro (STM) could move the stock.

Market Vectors Rolls Out Factor-Based ETFs

Market Vectors ETF Trust said early Thursday that it launched four new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) powered by factors, or investment screens, that track companies according to their return on equity, leverage, earnings growth and dividends.

The new ETFs are the Market Vectors MSCI International Quality ETF (QXUS), Market Vectors MSCI Emerging Markets Quality ETF (QEM), Market Vectors MSCI International Quality Dividend ETF (QDXU), and Market Vectors MSCI Emerging Markets Quality Dividend ETF (QDEM).

“Quality matters. Quality as an investment factor has historically outperformed broad international and emerging markets equities with relatively lower volatility over long time periods, but until now, a quality — focused, factor — based approach has usually been accessible only through active strategies,” said Amrita Bagaria, international-equity ETF product manager with Market Vectors, in a press release.

“We have heard the concerns of investors who understand that you need to be selective and find a way to identify quality stocks, because you don’t necessarily want to hold every single company when investing in international or emerging markets,” Bagaria explained.

QXUS’s gross expense ratio is 0.69%, and its net expense ratio is 0.45%. QEM has a gross expense ratio of 0.74% and a net expense ratio of 0.50%. QDXU’s gross expense ratio is 0.67% and its net expense ratio is 0.45%. QDEM has a gross expense ratio of 0.73% and a net expense ratio of 0.50%.

The net expense ratios for all four funds are capped contractually until at least Feb. 1, 2015, according to Market Vectors.

“Holdings in both indexes are screened for historically high return on equity [ROE], stable annual earnings growth and low financial leverage,” said Diana Tidd, managing director and head of the MSCI Index Business in the Americas, in a statement. “Our research suggests that the Quality growth companies have high ROE, low financial leverage and stable earnings that are uncorrelated with the broad business cycle and may provide diversification benefits in portfolio allocation.”

Forces Behind Factoring

iShares recencenty introduced factor-based ETFs. The iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL), for instance, now has about $290 million in assets. According to Morningstar, QUAL had a price return of 11.7% in the fourth quarter vs. 10.5% for the S&P 500.

In a 2013 report on factor-based investment, two experts at State Street Global Advisors explained that issues like market instability, lowered return expectations and higher return requirements have put traditional portfolio construction approaches under “intense scrutiny.”

“Factor-based frameworks that hold the promise of working better during periods of instability and crisis, have begun to gain traction,” wrote Stacy Marino and Rick Thomas of SSGA. “The main advantages of a factor-based approach are a better quantification of underlying risk exposures and an ability to directly benefit from factor payoffs. Its main limitation is the same limitation found in a more traditional approach.”

In other words, factor-based portfolios rely on the traditional asset classes and hence the returns they produce, they note. But such an approach may lead to well-thought-out asset allocation, “one that better aligns an investment plan’s objectives and risk tolerances with reasonable asset class exposures.”

Overall, the SSGA experts conclude, using a factor-based approach “forces an investment committee to think about the true sources of risk and return, and it opens a framework to harvest return premiums from unconventional sources.”

The current level of assets held by investors across the Market Vectors ETF product line is $22.1 billion. The product sponsor is Van Eck Global.

“By combining the search for dividend yield in international and emerging markets with MSCI’s quality screens, investors will be able to add exposures that may potentially generate excess returns and benefit their portfolios in down markets,” Bagaria said.

"Insidious Chapter 2" Had Better Thank Netflix

Some sequels are better off left unmade.

Yes, I'm talking to you, Grown Ups 2. Don't think you're getting a free pass, Speed 2: Cruise Control. If the original entry was critically panned -- cough, cough, Grown Ups -- there's no reason to keep going. If a movie works under the outrageous premise that a bus will blow up if it slows down, there's no need to whisk Sandra Bullock onto a cruise ship for a sequel to Speed.

This brings us to Insidious Chapter 2. The followup to 2011's Insidious hits a multiplex near you next weekend, and it certainly wasn't the kind of box-office smash that would send studios scrambling for a sequel. The supernatural horror flick about a family coping with a demon-possessed son took in just a little more than $54 million in its domestic theatrical run.

However, the movie has been well reviewed. Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) users have bestowed it a rating of 3.7 stars out of five, and that's a pretty good rating on the leading video service. The movie was available for streaming on Netflix until this past May, when a licensing deal ran out, and its success there probably played a major part in the decision to for FilmDistrict to go ahead with a sequel.

Nearly 1.8 million Netflix subscribers have rated the movie. That's huge for a movie that was seen by fewer than 7 million moviegoers when it was playing on the big screen (dividing $54 million in box office receipts by the average ticket price in 2011 of $7.93). We've seen Netflix build an audience for TV shows including Mad Men and, more recently, Breaking Bad. But now we have a good example of Netflix streaming as an asset to a theatrical franchise if the sequel manages to beat out the original.

It also helps that supernatural movies have been storming back to life this year. Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX  ) The Conjuring has raked in more than $134 million in ticket sales this summer. That's not too shabby for a movie with a $20 million production budget. Mama's $71 million take earlier this year wasn't as impressive, but it still fared better than Insidious.

Let's hope that the producers of Insidious Chapter 2 keep this all in mind as the next few weeks play out. Thanking Netflix -- and The Conjuring -- won't happen. The Netflix licensing deal went away four months ago. Time Warner's creepy movie is the competition. However, it would be the right thing to do.

"It will take what you love most," is the film's tag line, but it's those two factors that helped bring it back.

Top 10 Stocks To Watch For 2014

Spencer Platt/Getty Images Bank of America said Thursday that it was cutting 1,200 to 1,300 mortgage jobs because of declines in refinancing activity and an improvement in its portfolio of delinquent home loans. The employees are based in divisions that handle processing new mortgages and service home loans that are past due, a spokesman said. They received notice this week that their positions were being eliminated. News of the layoffs was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper also said Bank of America (BAC) was looking to cut 3,000 mortgage jobs by the end of the year. The spokesman couldn't immediately confirm that number. The second-largest U.S. bank laid off more than 9,000 full-time employees in the third quarter. Finance chief Bruce Thompson said on an Oct. 16 conference call with analysts that the reductions were concentrated in the unit that collects payments on current and delinquent home loans, the unit that makes new home loans, and in many of the bank's branches. Bank of America made $22.6 billion in home loans in the third quarter, down 11 percent from the second quarter. The number of mortgage applications the bank had received but not yet processed fell 60 percent from the end of June to the end of September. Also, mortgage loans that were delinquent by more than 60 days fell by 94,000 to 398,000 in the third quarter. The bank expects a further decline to below 375,000 by the end of 2013. Rising interest rates have curtailed mortgage refinancing since the spring. The interest rate on a 30-year mortgage stood at 4.39 percent in the week that ended Friday, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, down from a high of 4.80 percent in September but above the 3.59 percent rate in early May. Bank of America expects to make fewer home loans in the fourth quarter and will look to cut more mortgage jobs, Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan said on the conference call. The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank isn't the only lender to lay off staff in response to a slowdown in refinancing. Wells Fargo (WFC), the largest U.S. mortgage lender, said on Oct. 17 that it was cutting 925 mortgage jobs. That comes on top of the 5,300 Wells Fargo mortgage employees that were notified that they would be laid off in the third quarter.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Nanosphere Inc. (NASDAQ: NSPH) is not exactly a household name in molecular diagnostics, and apparently it needs better name recognition for boosting sales. Its sales were disappointing and the stock was down almost 18% at $2.40, and now we have indications down around $2.35 in Wednesday trading indications.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 medical equipment player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Nanosphere (NSPH), which develops, manufactures and markets an advanced molecular diagnostics platform, the Verigene System, which enables simple, low-cost and highly sensitive genomic and protein testing on a single platform. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 27%.

If you take a look at the chart for Nanosphere, you'll notice that this stock is just starting to spike sharply higher today back above its 50-day moving average of $2 a share. This spike is quickly pushing shares of NSPH within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That breakout will trigger once NSPH manages to take out the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NSPH if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.17 to $2.20 a share and then once it takes out its gap down day high from August at $2.29 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 652,718 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NSPH will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that stated just above $3 a share. If that gap gets filled with volume, then NSPH could easily tag $3.50 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy NSPH off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.81 to $1.77 a share. One can also buy NSPH off strength once it clears those resistance levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Study: Gen Y may like cars after all

New findings from consulting giant Deloitte debunk a notion held in recent years that young people don't want to drive anymore.

Generation Y — born roughly from 1977 to 1994 — are more than 80 million strong and nearly 50 million of them plan to buy a new or used car in the next three years, according to Craig Griffi, Deloitte vice chairman and automotive practice leader

"There's been a lot of conjecture about whether Gen-Yers even like driving," Griffi said. But Deloitte found nearly two-thirds of Gen Y Americans "would indicate that they love their cars."

Nearly 700 Gen-Y-age Americans participated in Deloitte's survey, which encompassed more than 23,000 respondents across 19 countries. The company will release full results later this year, but it disclosed some findings earlier this week on a group that automakers have spent years trying to understand.

To be sure, Deloitte notes some of America's car culture has been lost. Gen Y faces three barriers to vehicle shopping: needs being met by other transportation like walking, mass transit and car-sharing programs; operational costs such as fuel and maintenance; and vehicle affordability.

Start with the first one. More than two-thirds of Gen Y consumers "would prefer to live in neighborhoods with everything in walking distance," Griffi said. Given rising traffic congestion, that isn't necessarily a problem, but "obviously the vehicle starts to become less important," he added.

Unless it drives itself. A high percentage Gen Y consumers view self- driving cars — anathema to performance enthusiasts, but an inexorable goal for the auto industry — as a big benefit, said Joe Vitale, who leads Deloitte's global automotive sector.

That doesn't mean Gen Y wants to abandon wheels altogether. Just 29 percent said they'd be willing to give up their personal cars for other forms of mobility, Deloitte notes. Semi-autonomous technologies that help drivers avoid accidents score big with the group. Some four-fifths of resp! ondents rated technology that helps the vehicle avoid crashes as very important, Vitale said.

The biggest worry that some investors have about Pengrowth is that its dividend is large compared to its earnings. Similar issues forced Penn West Petroleum (NYSE: PWE  ) , also a former Canroy, to cut its dividend a couple months ago. Although extraordinary measures have helped Pengrowth and Enerplus (NYSE: ERF  ) sustain payouts at levels that were last reduced in the middle of 2012, both companies could eventually see further pressure on their payouts in future.

  • [By Alex Planes]

One thing investors need to watch is Pengrowth's sky-high payout ratio, which, at present levels, is clearly unsustainable. Pengrowth's asset sales will help paper over the shortfall in the near term, but it's not good policy to pay out so much in the middle of a major exploration project. The company has no plans to cut its dividend, in spite of anticipated production declines in the near term, which stands in stark contrast to competitor Penn West (NYSE: PWE  ) , which slashed its dividend by nearly halfin a wide-ranging announcement earlier this week. Both Pengrowth and Penn West trade at substantial discounts to book value, but at least Pengrowth's monster dividend gives investors something more substantial while waiting for big exploration projects to bear fruit. However, given the company's multi-year weakness, it will take a strong stomach, and a very firm belief in Pengrowth's prospects, to jump in today.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Penn West (NYSE: PWE  ) is about to change the nameplate on its CEO's office. The company announced that current Chief Executive and President Murray Nunns has announced his departure, effective July 1. Starting June 19, his place will be taken by David Roberts, onetime executive vice president and chief operating officer of Marathon Oil. Penn West said it intends to name him to its board of directors once he takes up the CEO post.

A huge net-net like Ingram Micro (IM) with nine out of ten years of profits in the last decade is pretty unusual. And Ingram operates on a razor-thin margin. It usually makes about one cent in profit for every dollar of sales.

My take is that Qualcomm has rapidly established itself as the de facto standard for connecting with medical devices. The company isn't doing it alone, though. It teamed with Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM  ) , the world's largest technology distributor, to support the implementation, logistics, and financial services related to the 2net hub and platform. This partnership should help propagate Qualcomm's technology more effectively than the company could have done on its own.

On Wednesday, Westport announced it has begun producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) "tenders" for use by Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  ) . A tenderis a train car whose primary purpose is carrying fuel to supply the train's locomotive engine. Westport plans to deliver its first such tender to CNR in Q4 of this year, with three more tenders to follow subsequently.

Both Canadian National Railway (CNI) and VF Corporation (VFC) show very similar numbers in many of the critical categories in our screening process.

  • [By Isac Simon]

    An appropriate reaction?
The market's reaction to railroad companies hasn't been favorable. Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  ) (NYSE: CNI  ) traded down today by 0.6%, while Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) (NYSE: UNP  ) lost more than 0.7% of its market value. Clearly, the markets took Saturday's accident seriously. However, with so much crude oil ready for cross-country trips, railroad companies are unlikely to be affected in the grander scheme of things, at least in the near term.

The company?s research programs focus on the discovery of small-molecule therapeutics and biomarkers to treat and monitor serious pulmonary and fibrotic diseases. InterMune, Inc. was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Brisbane, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    InterMune (NASDAQ: ITMN  )
InterMune shares may have exploded higher by 30% over the past week, but there's certain to be a lot of nail-biting on the part of shareholders as we head into earnings season. The reason has been the slow acceptance of the company's idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis drug, Esbriet, based on its pricing in the EU. In previous quarters Esbriet sales have disappointed in a big way, but are expected to rise by 134% to nearly $13 million from last year, though losses are still anticipated to come in at $0.70 per share. Following its recent pop, Esbriet sales had better hit the mark, otherwise InterMune shareholders are probably going to be in for a long day.

It has developed an assay! to measure occupancy of Btk in PBMCs using a cell-permeable fluorescently-labeled derivative of PCI-32765.

Factor VII is an enzyme that becomes activated (FVIIa) by binding to the cell surface protein tissue factor (TF), a protein found in the body that helps to trigger the process of blood clotting in response to injury. TF is over expressed in many cancers including gastric, breast, colon, lung, prostate, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. In these tumors, the FVIIa/TF complex induces intracellular signaling pathways by activating protease activated receptor 2 (PAR-2), another cell-surface protein. This in turn increases the expression of interleukin-8 (IL-8), a protein produced by white blood cells and other immune cells in response to pathogenic stimulation, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a signal protein produced by cells that stimulate the growth of blood vessels. Both proteins play an important role in tumor growth and metastases as well as angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels). FVIIa/TF complex also initiates the coagulation (a process by which blood forms clots) processes implicated in the high incidence of thromboembolic (the process by which the blood clots within a blood vessel) complications seen in patients with TF-expressing cancers. Thromboembolic events are a cause of death in patients with cancer and anticoagulant treatment has been shown to improve survival in a variety of cancers (Klerk et al. JCO. 2005).

PCI-27483 Factor VIIa Inhibitor

The Company Factor VIIa inhibitor PCI-27483 is a first-in-human small molecule inhibitor that selectively targets FVIIa. As an inhibitor of FVIIa, PCI-27483 has two potential mechanisms of action: inhibition of intracellular signaling involved in tumor growth and metastases and inhibition of early coagulation processes associated with thromboembolism.

Factor VIIa PCI-27483 Clinical Development Update

A multicenter Phase I/II of PCI-27483 in patients with locally a! dvanced o! r metastatic pancreatic cancer that are either receiving or are planned to receive gemcitabine therapy has completed enrollment. The Phase II portion of the study randomized patients to receive either gemcitabine alone or gemcitabine plus PCI-27483 (1.2 mg/kg twice daily). The objectives are to assess the safety of FVIIa Inhibitor PCI-27483 at pharmacologically active dose levels, to assess potential inhibition of tumor progression and to obtain initial information of the effects on the incidence of thromboembolic events. Due to a paradigm shift away from the use of gemcitabine alone for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, enrolling patients in this randomized study has been challenging. PCYC is evaluating other alternatives for development of this agent.

A multicenter Phase I/II of PCI-27483 in patients with locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer that are either receiving or are planned to receive gemcitabine therapy has completed enrollment. The Phase II portion of the study randomized patients to receive either gemcitabine alone or gemcitabine plus PCI-27483 (1.2 mg/kg twice daily). Although its summer, there has been a steady stream of good news about medical marijuana even though important small cap marijuana stocksMedical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) and Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) have been fairly quietly lately while Growlife Inc (OTCBB: PHOT), a more indirect play on the spread of legalized marijuana, has producedsome news for investors:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Wow. That didn't take long. It was only two days ago that marijuana stocks like Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), and Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP) were all the rage, flying high on the heels of a new year... a new year in which marijuana was legalized (for one reason or another) in two more states. HEMP was up as much as 700% in less than three weeks at one point. MDBX gained 300% at the beginning of the year, when recreational marijuana began to be legally sold in Colorado. CBIS jumped 400% off of its December low. MJNA nearly doubled on the advent of new marijuana venues. PHOT soared more than 130% since the end of last year on the legalization of marijuana. It was, truthfully, some of the fastest big money that traders have ever made in the market.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

The last few days have been nothing less than incredible for stocks like Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), and Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA). MJNA shares have jumped 90% since last Friday. PHOT is up 51% for the same timeframe. CBIS has grown 150%, while MDBX is up 112%. The reason? It's largely the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado - a law that went into effect as of January 1st. The legalization of medical marijuana in Illinois on the same day didn't hurt either. And truth be told, the event-based rally from the likes of Medbox and Cannabis Science makes basic sense - it's a landmark shift in the way this country views and treats marijuana. On the flipside, before wading any deeper into stocks like Medical Marijuana or Growlife, current and would-be owners might want to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

The difference between Growlife's leadership and, say that of competitors like Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS: CBIS) or Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS: MJNA), has been relatively well documented here at the SmallCap Network site. I think the way I - well, someone else - put it back on June 25th says it best...."Growlife is sort of the demure girl in the corner who doesn't do shots off her navel in the bar." It may not have sizzle, but it does have substance.
